    Shramajivi Mahila Samity is working with a vision to empower women by education, economic independence and leadership skills so as to develop a balanced and just society which may provide equal opportunities for both its men and women.  

    Mission

    The mission of Shramajivi Mahila Samity is to enable tribal and other women to become self-dependent in the Socio-economic spheres, motivating women groups to be part of the decision making process and local self governance and by promoting their education, ensuring women’s participation in eco-friendly land, water, forest management of the area and own up the responsibility of sustainable development.  

    Objectives

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity envisages some of the main objectives since its beginning and constantly strives to concentrate its effort towards these issues mentioned below:- Provide a friendly and congenial platform for the women folk especially the downtrodden, underprivileged, oppressed, grassroots level & the lowest strata of the society. Ensure acceptance, recognition and human dignity to the aforesaid women class. To build awareness, confidence and motivate the women especially tribal to improve their socio-economic condition. To make the women self- reliant and self-dependent so that all sound upliftment and their development can take place. To enable them to participate and get involved in the process of governance and decision making. Empower the women so as to safeguard their rights, liberty and freedom of expression, and  thoughts. Enable the women and the society to realize that women is a materialistic entity, she has to be given the Opportunity to work and live and also to dream, and feel free to express her dream in her own way.

    Recent Achievements

  • Prior to its registration SMS was successful in providing land rights to 70 women at Patamda block for which it was also awarded by the state government.
  • SMS has been engaged in developing the training module and training materials on Panchayati Raj Institution of Jharkhand. In fact, it has been recognized by state government for its valuable contribution in developing the materials and modules.
  • Around 500 dropout children were admitted in the formal schools.
  • Between 1997 - 98 SMS has helped the artisans in formation of artisans’ panchayats in East and West Singhbhum districts.
  • 2001-2002 SMS has been engaged in developing the training module and training materials on Panchayati Raj Institution of Jharkhand.
  • Formation of 1100 S.H.G’s working in 30, blocks aggregating to 11300 women members.
  • Organized about 400000 single women and accessed their needs.
  • 13 Thousand child labour has been identified from child labour survey in East & West Singhbhum.
  • 8000 single women accessing land through lease/ Patta.
  • A circulation letter has been published by the labour department for migrant labour on making labour card, hence the excluded migrant families will get benefits from this card.
  • Priority given to the single women in the selection Sahiya and Anganwadi Sevika by Dept. of Women and Child Development.
  • We have developed a “White Paper” on the status of single women of Jharkhand for which recommendations from May renowned personalities of different fields have come.
  • 30,000 single women are the member of ENSS. This force of single women is raising their voice against discrimination done with the single women in every sphere and for their rights.
  • 6,283 women achieved membership of different decision making bodies at village and panchayat level;
  • 53,064 applications are submitted for the disbursement of benefits under different government schemes out of which 32,462 applications were sanctioned
  • Rs. 9 ,28,27,350 (Nine Crores Twenty-Eight Lakhs Twenty-Seven Thousands Three Hundred and Fifty Rupees) were leveraged through the linkages with different government sponsored schemes.
  • Total SHG’s formed have saved Rs. 53,43,746 and obtained Rs. 44,54,080 as the credit linkage from banks. Thus the total capital worth 97,97,826 accumulated.
  • 7,317 single women accessed homestead land where 1289 owned land under Indira Awas Yojna, 118 women were granted government land, 1801 women procured land through settlement and 4000 women were benefit out of partition in their families.
  • Organized about 400000 single women and accessed their needs and 8000 single women accessed land through lease/ Patta.
  • SMS acts as a member in several national & state level advisory bodies.
  • 1072 Young women and girls developed capacity and trained as an Internet Saathi and were reach out and imparted Digital literacy training in 7,16,292 rural women.
  • Likewise SMS attained due recognition at the following state level joint program planning and advisory bodies such as –

    3. State PCPNDT Committee
  • Shramajivi Mahila Samity has been able to curve a space for itself in its journey of past ten years and reflect its achievements as here under :-
  • In the year 1989-90 prior to its registration SMS was successful in providing land rights to 70 women at Patamda block for which it was also awarded by the state government.

  • In 10 blocks of East and West Singhbhum districts legal counseling centers has been formed by the help of SMS.
  • 2001-2002 SMS has been engaged in developing the training module and training materials on Panchayati Raj Institution of Jharkhand. In fact, it has been recognized by state government for its valuable contribution in developing the materials and modules.
  • In the farm and non farm sector several techniques were imparted to the youth for their better long term income generation.
  • In 2001-02 around 500 children were admitted in the formal schools.Ú 15 men and women became master trainers on various craft who deliver their training classes at various organizations.
  • Promotion of women leaders through women participation in local self governance. These Women are now ready to take part in the election contest ahead.
  • SMS acts as a member in several national & state level advisory bodies
  • Special concern was given by SMS in the formation of Ekal Nari Sashakti Sanghatan to cater to the innumerable and glaring issue of single women in Jharkhand region.
  • Formation of 250 S.H.G’s working in Sonua, Dumuria, and Patamda blocks aggregating to 2500 women members. Formation of 25 Groups of Bidi Mazdoors in Sonua block, West singhbhum
  • Organised about 10000 single women and accessed their needs.
  • 13 Thousand child labour has been identified from child labour survey in East & West
  • Future direction of the organization

    In the coming future Shramajivi Mahila Samity will expose itself as dynamic organization troubleshooting the financial hindrances of the women & marginalized group such that the last fellow will also be equipped with all social , political, economical and legal facilities to come up as a dignified citizen. SMS plan to work with the issues like Gender, Trafficking, livelihood, governance, Food security, reproductive health & rights, human rights and advocacy extensively. SMS will strive to deliver quality program and activities with right planning and innovative thinking which shall enable poorest of the poor, women and marginalized group to become the first citizen of the Nation. The working areas where we wish to concentrate are East / West Singhbhum, Seraikela and 22 districts of Jharkhand. The working partners are women headed NGOs, community based organization, registered grass root groups amongst the target group. SMS strives to deliver the objectives by approaching the right based work taking into social, political, economical, legal and psychological considerations for development for the target group being poorest women and marginalized group. This orientation of right based work catalyzed with value added work will form dynamic organization and resource organization. Dynamic organization work with planning and innovative thinking with right inspiration shall enable this poorest of the poor women and marginalized group to become the first citizen of the society and propagate this thinking / mindset on a global level.

    Key Thematic Areas of Intervention so far

    SMS has taken the right based approach to work on its theme of social excexclusion. The key theme on which we are working is poverty, food right and security, health and education right, capacity development for the excluded class, livelihood and resource right, adolescent health and right, skill development on NTFP and access by forest dwellers, women and maternal health, local governance and PRI, enhanced participation of women in democracy etc.
    The organization promotes women empowerment by establishing women rights & group formation, gender based economic & social upgrading, check on women violence, women & adolescent girls education & health, emphasis of self governance and marginalized group participation, Food Security & Livelihood development of women, children & single women empowerment.
    The key issues that we have addressed are i.e. gender inequality and discrimination is our prime issue in all spheres be it food, education and health right, reproductive health right, adolescent girls right, access and control over natural resources and community resources. Our next issue was the severe hunger problem in the excluded community. We also observed that their food right was also deprived of. So, we address on hunger check, food security, aiming for poverty alleviation in the long run.
    The next issue we took up was migration and trafficking due to utmost poverty. This has considerable impact on the adolescent girls and young women. And hence we addressed it in 6 blocks in East and West Singhbhum. Other issues we addressed are domestic violence, witchcrafts, gender violence and molestation. These problems were seen more in single women, tribal women, dalit women and women of the minority community etc.
    Simultaneously SMS has also formed 281 SHGs in East & West Singhbhum Districts under the 5 blocks. Presently Two federation of such women has been formed which comprises of 3615 members. Which has amassed total savings amount of Rs.28,62,080.00 (Rupees Twenty eight Lacks Sixty two Thousand eighty ) only. The credit linkage has been done up to Rs.77,60,000 (Rupees Seventy seven Lacks sixty Thousand only).

    Our Focus Areas

    The key issues that we have addressed are i.e. combat gender inequality and discrimination is our prime issue in all spheres be it food, education and health right, reproductive health right, adolescent girls right, access and control over natural resources and community resources.     We work empowering the community to eliminate Sex Selection and Sex Determination to guarantee a life of dignity for the girl child ,enhance the value of the girl child in society by changing mindsets and ensuring ownership of the issue by the community and the government. The Focus areas are Child Rights particularly focusing Girl Children – in the field of education, Health & Gender discrimination.

    SMS work with the single women in the 8 dist covering 27 blocks. SMS as a CSO has the role of strengthening the single women association (ENSS) and their block level federations towards the access to rev. land and health promotion Land rights & livelihood promotion through right based approach and empowerment is a new issue for the single women.

    SMS working effectively functioning Gram Sabha in adherence to PESA & FRA. Increased involvement of women in decision making process in Gram Sabhas •The poverty stricken ST family and women headed families, to a large proportion, are getting rid of the vicious cycle of poverty as they endowed with all govt. entitlement and benefits including durable assets creation.

    Internet Saathi programme sponsored by Google was launched in association with Tata Trust and PHIA Foundation. Its main objective is to help in closing down the digital literacy gaps. SMS work on Digital literacy and digital livelihood program in 5 Districts and 36 blocks with partnership of PHIA Foundation.Upon the completion of the targets by the Saathis, such active and interested saathis are to be linked to the digital livelihood programme where the saathi’s themselves will carry out the survey work in the concerned villages. Active Saathis have been engaged in periodic surveys based on certain indicators as desired by Niti Aayog. Such thematic areas are Health & Nutrition, Education, Agriculture & Water Resources, Financial Inclusion & Skill Development and Basic Infrastructure. As of now, only two themes have been focused- Health and Education.

    SMS work with the single women (Widows, destitute, abandoned, single mothers etc), Girls, tribal women, minority, landless, forest dwellers, artisans, daily wages women labours ect.

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity address to certain core issues:-

    Women Empowerment :-

    One of the prime issue of SMS to empower the socially downtrodden, under privileged and exploited tribal and marginalised women through organizing them into meaningful and effective groups by capacity building and skill development so that they can access their rights.

    Livelihood :-

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity strives to develop livelihood in farm as well as non farm sectors by resource generation, skill building and potential tapping. Both at the individual as well as family level and enable them towards sustainable development. Focus is on women exercising their land and livelihood rights.

    Governance :-

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity emphasises and local empowers the target groups on self governance like Gram Sabha and Mahila Sabha etc. It ensures equal participation of women in the local self governance and political area. Women raise their issues in the Gram Sabha and find out solutions that can be implemented.

    Food Security :-

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity strives to ensure food security for the community as a whole irrespective of the economic status of the family right at the grass root and BPL level. This is ensured deeply at the local village level. It further attempts to live up with the govt. food distribution system for convergence and entitlement to the genuine hunger and poverty stricken. Further it is working on the community level so that village group formation is done and these village groups chalk out strategies to ensure food security and implement at their respective village level to action sustenance.

    Reproductive Health :-

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity has contributed and emphasises on the reproductive health of the women and adolescent girls of the community. It address the entire life span of these women and kishories as a whole pertaining to their reproductive health. It further takes about the need and significance of reproductive rights of women and adolescent girls. It also caters to the all round personality development of these kishories so that they can be groomed to access their human rights, which is the need of the hour.

    SHG and Economics Development :-

    The economic status of the community is so poor so that resources cannot be created at the individual level. Hence SMS initiated to form self help groups. These self groups are motivated and morally supported to develop strategies to create resource at the group level. These SHG’s are then linked to the banks and financial institutions, so that they can access credit facility for economic activities that are viable and sustainable, SMS has been successful to form and provide training and capacity building, so that the SHG’s are able to create a space for themselves in the competitive market. Literacy and education serves as a tool to control and manage the entire affairs on their own.

    Indigenous People :-

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity has always been a pioneer in contributing to the development of the indigenous people as a community, the focus has always centered around the women, specially tribal women and the under privileged women. It addresses the tribal women, their community and the impact of nature on them. Nature and natural resources are the basis around which tribal women inhabit and so the access of natural resources for the indigenous people is so specific. SMS motivates and inclines these indigenous groups through formation of associations and groups and train them to equip in capacity and skills enhancement.

    Human Rights :-

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity has always been sensitive towards human rights through the beginning. It perceives human rights an issue for different strata of the society like the primitive tribes, the single women, the disabled and the political and reproductive rights are infringed upon by different communities in the social setup in numerous ways. Hence SMS focuses on the rights of single women and has undertaken a project to enable these women to form the main stream of the society and groom them socially, politically, psychologically and economically to exercise their human rights and curve a place of dignity for themselves.

    Capacity Building and Skill Development :-

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity has always been a front winner in contributing towards the capacity building and skills development . This is an important activity of SMS and it has always catered to the capacity building and skill development of the various groups like SHG’s, Mahila Mandals, Artisans, Bidi-Mazdoors, Adolescent-Girls, Gram Sabha, Village development youths groups, Farmers and Labour groups and every sector of the women. In skill development SMS concentrated on self development leadership skills, personality development, management and supervision skills, and formulation of planes and its effective implementation.

    Child Rights -


    About the Organization / Genesis

    Shramajivi Mahila Samity is a civil society organization was started in 1995 and itself registered as a non- government organization under Society Registration Act. Gradually Shramajivi Mahila Samity tried and made attempts to find its foothold as a body of like-minded people striving for human causes especially for women and thus made a beginning towards women development. This has led to discover its own identity. SMS took pledge to initiate some beginning towards the development of these women, improve the status of women and bridge the gap between the gender i.e. man and woman. With strong resolution, SMS started its journey from East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand state. Shramajivi Mahila Samity had earned footage in the area of forming women based organizations and capacitating them since 1987 to 1994. Since its inception the organization is the field of development and acceptance after it was registered as a voluntary organization in the year 1995.

    SMS has taken the community participation approach to work on its theme of social exclusion. The key theme on which we are working is combat poverty through food right and livelihood development. Farming and resource right of women, skill development on NTFP and FRA, local governance and PESA, enhanced participation of women in democracy, Digital literacy and digital livelihood and child & Girls right etc. The organization is on its continuous strive to work for the development of single women, schedule caste and scheduled tribe, and backward class of marginalized and downtrodden women.

    Besides the role of SMS is to organize excluded community (especially women) for capacity building, massive skill development, land and & livelihood right, SHG’s & economic development, Artisan Panchyats, rights for single women & humanity.

    During the long phase of journey Shramajivi Mahila Samity has a deep learn and grown from root to stem gradually and is able to stand distinctly with more stability, updated vision and line of thinking. The frequent change in the environmental situation has constantly made us to reorient ourselves and make relevant intervention towards improving the quality of lives of the focused group. SMS in the present phase plans to concentrate on creating a conducive environment for the grassroots women headed NGOs, livelihood promotion, women empowerment and poverty alleviation and thereby ensure an equitable social set-up.

    The prime aim of the organisation is to enable tribal and other women to become self-dependent in the socio – economic spheres, motivating women groups to be part of the decision making process and ensure participation in natural resource management and sustainable development.
